Mobilization

Brief summary

War has become the organizing principle for society and this principle was above all others. Everything changed.

War has become the organizing principle for society and this principle was above all others. It restructured families, created and dissolved communities, overrode privileges or rules of the market. It was different from the peace times to its core. Instead of society’s rules, war goals serving the states’ will dominated people’s lives and days. The war reshaped burdens of providing for the family and created new forms of social solidarity, filling the often amorphous idea of the need for social justice with real experience.

“The economic organization of the war, the case of war supplies was a rather confused and complicated affair, offering many opportunities for infringements and for wheeling and dealing. Supplies were being delivered in such quantities that controls became almost impossible.”
