Slaughterhouse

Brief summary

The way the big explosion took place, it included everything what used to be regarded as achievements before.

The way the big explosion took place, it included everything what used to be regarded as achievements before. Trust in advancement also meant that human life could be prolonged – that medical science was to bring salvation as a profane priest. That’s why they kept Latin as their own language and differentiated themselves even with the clothes they wore. Truly, the war accelerated the processes with which human lives could be saved, missing body parts replaced, a human aesthetically reshaped, physical pain eased. Of course, a fight like this only brings partial success: there are things medication is always useless for. On the other hand it turned out that despite every humanist slogan of the 19th century, a person’s life may worth less than a life of a farm animal. War has shown that reality of words is often only the reality of an illusion.

“In war a soldier’s life is worth 2 pennies, while that of a horse is worth 4.”
Gergely B. Sárközy

“Dogs delivered messages with due loyalty, without any sense of politics or racial hatred, giving preference to the trench from which the more enticing smell of food was coming.”
József Pásztor, 1915

“We spend most of daytime hunting for lice. Our bodies are red from lice bite.”
György Zelenák, 1914

“There is no more horrible means of war than gas. Nothing can create more of a panic than gas.”
Regiment physician dr. Gyula Kemény, 1915
